knifepoint. new tonight, how police say a woman tried to get away from her attacker after a run-in at a mall. and no more doubt about the severe effects of the zika virus in unborn children. criminals using social media to brag about and document their crimes. according to police, one recent example involved the death of a prince georges county police officer. >> new at 11, news4's jackie bensen talked to the prosecutor about the twisted ways the bad guys are using the web. >> reporter: the shocking information was revealed in court today. last month's horrific ambush of the prince georges county police district 3 station that left 28-year-old officer jakai dawson dead was supposed to make michael ford an internet sensation. ford had asked his two brothers, now co-defendants,

planned, but failed, suicide by cop on his cell phone and send it to the website. we caught up with state's attorney on social media dangers at a laurel high school tonight. she claims her office is seeing an increasing number of cases in which criminals are taking to social media to boast about and even document their crimes. >> we have these very poor examples here and across the country of people who do dangerous and destructive things and they become famous for it. so the notoriety is often a factor for them. this is a way to become popular. >> reporter: d.c. police also confirmed some of the participants in several recent high-profile crimes used social media to fuel the fires of violence. >> the amount of disputes that are arising out of communication that is occurring through these electronic mediums between these kids is huge, and i know you've en

and we monitor it all the time. >> reporter: we are told that video from the district 3 police station ambush never made it to the website. in prince georges county, jackie bensen, news4. another disturbing case tonight involving crime on social media. prosecutors in ohio say a drunk teenager broadcast her friend being sexually assaulted live on p periscope. she has been indicted as an accessory along with the man in the video who is raping her friend. the "today" show is working on this story. we'll have much more tomorrow morning at 7:00. we're working to find out if atlanta braves hector olivera is out of jail tonight. he is accused of assaulting a woman in pentagon city. police say he knew the woman. the two reportedly got in an argument after she came to his hotel room last night. police say the woman had bruises and was taken to the hospital. major league baseball put

olivera on leave tonight as the investigation continues. there is new information on the global fight against the zika virus. the centers for disease control say there is no longer any doubt. zika is the prime cause of severe birth defects. scientists officially linking the mosquito-borne illness with microcephaly in a new report in the journal of medicine. scientists will look at what other effects zika can have on unborn babies. women and their partners should avoid taking steps traveling to areas where zika is prevalent if they plan on getting pregnant. kind of a cool night across our area today after what was a fairly cool day. temperatures into the upper 50s. we did hit 60 down towards fredricksburg. this time of year average is 66, so we were a little below average. we'll get closer to that average tomorrow. latest advisories now. frost advisories in the

mall. the suspect walked up to the woman while she was shopping 9:45 p.m. on monday. he continued to bother her when she started to leave. when she walked across the street on breezewood drive, investigators tell us the suspect pulled out a knife, thre threaded and sexually assaulted her in a nearby wooded area. >> i don't want to have to feel like my life is in danger. >> reporter: as police investigate, this community is on edge. >> i won't be walking out in the dark. >> reporter: now keep in mind this happened, police say, around 9:45 in the night monday, and they urge anyone with information, if you saw anything suspicious around that time, give the greenbelt police department a call. live in greenbelt, shomari stone, news4. tonight we're hearing from the company that manages the centreville apartment complex where a man sexually assaulted a 77-year-old woman. eagle point development tells us it is, quote, devastated and it's cooperating fully with police to catch the attacker. tss

residents complained to news4 that a security door had been frequently left propped open. the management company says it will reinforce the need to control access to the building. they will continue to strike as long as it takes. that is the message from verizon's union workers tonight. some 40,000 of them, including many in our area, walked off the job at 6:00 this morning. and we found workers picketing today in ash burn, herndon and alexandria. current and even former employees took part in this job action because the strike revolves around retirement benefits. >> did you think after you retired you would have to come back to a picket line? >> no. this is the second picket line since i retired. >> we're trying to keep jobs here in america and we just want to work. >> very eye zon says it's been negotiating with the union since june. verizon says the company's agenda is rooted in the

a strike does not bring either side closer to a resolution. picketing will resume at 6:00 tomorrow morning. it got heated. metra chair jack evans calling out metro, blaming them on poor management. alan tubbs telling us they did acknowledge the system's crisis-to-crisis mode of dealing with problems is inefficient and wasteful. one congressman says metro didn't know how to spend the money it has, which sparked an angry response from evans. >> if you're looking at increasing the operating revenue the way you're talking about, you become the most expensive operating system. >> all i'm asking from you is $300 million which is your fair share given the fact that we transport 50% of your work force every day! >> congressman meadows later said he could support more funding if metro commits to making the system safe and

trouble for metro. a woman just filed a lawsuit saying that a metro bus driver was negligent when the bus hit her last month in arlington. that woman says she was walking in the crosswalk with the walk sign when she was hit and pinned under the bus. her attorneys say that she suffered a concussion and a broken arm. she's seeking $25 million in damages. we now know that the body found in a manassas retention pond last month belonged to a woman who was reported missing back in february. prince william county police today identified the body as 23-year-old rose detoro. we first told you about rose when she disappeared on february 4. her family told us she had bipolar disorder and was last seen at a manassas hotel there. the hotel isn't far from the pond where she was found. police say they do not suspect foul play. and new at 11, we're going to find out tomorrow if florida prosecutors are going to continue to pursue charges against donald trump's campaign

cory lewandowski turned himself in to jupiter, florida police last month after this campaign event where lewandowski is accused of grabbing and bruising a reporter's arm. they are reporting that prosecutors will drop the battery charge tomorrow. that has not been confirmed, however, by nbc news. the commander in chief says the united states has the momentum in the fight against isis. president obama speaking today at cia headquarters in langley, virginia after meeting his national security advisers. the president reviewed the progress the u.s. coalition is making in rolling back the islamic state from iraq and syria and killing its leaders. he said the u.s. has the upper hand. >> it only stiffens our unit and determination to wipe this bio terrorist organization off the face of the earth. >> obama says the u.s. will also keep working to secure a diplomatic resolution to syria's civil war. he says a fragile

toward cambridge. it's going to be a cold night tonight. that's why we have the frost and freeze advisories. the freeze warning in the light blue back here, frederick, leesburg, and then to the east, most of northern virginia and also montgomery and howard counties. this is where we have the frost advisories. don't be surprised if you wake up tomorrow morning and have to scrape the frost off your windshield. that's just something on the radar asking you to take that off. that's what's called clear air mode. it picks up anything out there. there's not much going on. not much in the way of cloud cover, either. that's the next storm system, a little front that came on through, and that will help to keep things on the cooler side the next couple of days. it also helps to keep the sunshine in or out for tomorrow. so a cold start tomorrow. 42 degrees with that sunshine tomorrow afternoon. cool but nice with a little bit of a breeze. some areas only in the upper 50s tomorrow, but most locations, i think, getting to the low 60s. that is a very nice afoo

if you liked today, you're going to like tomorrow even better. tomorrow morning, however, will be on the cool side. 34 in frederick, 31 around the gaithersburg area. some locations will get around the freezing area in the suburbs. heading back towards the shenandoah valley and parts of blue ridge, too. 59 gaithersburg, 65 down toward fredricksburg. we'll call it cool, but that's only because the average temperature tomorrow is at 65 degrees. we're technically seasonably cool, but it's still going to be a great one out here. here's what's happening. when you have high pressure dominating, that high pressure to the north keeps us on the cooler side. as it slides to the south, it allows us to really start to see the warmer air and the sun takes its focus here. lots of sunshine, seasonably cool until friday, and looking great and very warm for the weekend. look at these numbers. low to mid-60s thursday and friday. friday high of 68. sunday, a high of 70. then look at

the season is done. big question floating out there, is he done? >> randy whitman has been a good head coach for the wizards. if you don't perform, it's usually the head coach that gets blamed. based on their record, the wizards weren't great, good or bad this season. they were average. they ended on somewhat of a positive note. if it turns out randy whitman did coach his final game, at least his team went out with a victory. numerous reports say the organization will move on from whitman after this season. wizards with the hawks tonight
